My name is Mariatu Kamara, I have survived the civil war in Sierra Leone (1991-2002). The rebels attacked my village named Magborou. They amputated my hands, I was noticed by a man who lives in Toronto and he paid for me to go live there. I now live in Toronto.

How are you living now without hands?

I was offered prosthetic hands in Toronto but i turned them down. I like doing things myself, even when things get tough I always try to make do with what I have.

There are some very traumatic thing that happened in my life

When I was just a little girl I was raped by a man who lived in my village. His name was Salieu; he made me swear never to tell anyone. Not too long after, rebels attacked my village and I had to flee, but they caught me and amputated my hands. That day I was able to escape the rebels and I made a long journey to Freetown (see picture below.)

When I arrived at the Freetown hospital, I was greeted by two of my cousins. Their hands were cut off by the rebels as well. A couple of weeks later the doctor said I was pregnant and that I was going to give birth to a baby. I gave birth to a baby boy, I named him Abdul, but he became very ill and died before he was one year old. For a very long time I blamed myself for his death.
