Voices of Courage

I am part of a group called The Women's Refugee Commission. Last year on May 9th 2009 we had Women's Refugee Commission Day. I was chosen for the Voices of Courage Award.
Here is a picture of me after receiving my award.

There are some very traumatic thing that happened in my life

When I was just a little girl I was raped by a man who lived in my village. His name was Salieu; he made me swear never to tell anyone. Not too long after, rebels attacked my village and I had to flee, but they caught me and amputated my hands. That day I was able to escape the rebels and I made a long journey to Freetown (see picture below.)

When I arrived at the Freetown hospital, I was greeted by two of my cousins. Their hands were cut off by the rebels as well. A couple of weeks later the doctor said I was pregnant and that I was going to give birth to a baby. I gave birth to a baby boy, I named him Abdul, but he became very ill and died before he was one year old. For a very long time I blamed myself for his death.
